Arkansas River Tailwater

Pueblo, Colorado (4,692 ft)

Flowing through the heart of metropolitan Pueblo, the Arkansas isn’t just a great urban fishery. It’s a great fishery, period. This premier tailwater offers excellent opportunities for big Rainbow, Brown, and Cuttbow Trout, with typically less crowding than commonly seen on other famous Colorado tailwaters.  Located at lower elevation, this section of the Arkansas River generally remains ice-free throughout the winter. While many of our other favorite rivers are iced over, or low temps create frigid fishing experiences, the typical winter weather in Pueblo offers very pleasant fishing temps, free flowing water, and lots of hungry trout. It all adds up to a perfect winter fly fishing destination.  Midges and mayflies hatch in abundance here and dry fly fishing can be epic – even in the middle of January!

Blue River Tailwater below Dillon Dam
Siverthorne, CO (9,035 ft)

The Blue River below the Dillon Dam is well-known for holding an abundance of large trout.  The unique mix of urban and alpine environments creates the only destination in Colorado where someone can go skiing, shop the outlet mall, and catch a 5 pound trout, all within the same day.  Fishing this section of the Blue River is just plain cool.  Evergreens and cobbled stone banks frame crystal clear pools, braided riffles, and quiet runs.  Within these beautiful and convenient waters swim some of the state’s largest Rainbow, Cutbow, and Brown Trout.  The river is ice free year round making it the perfect destination for high country visitors itching to hook trout, possibly even the fish of a lifetime.
